Dr Samuel Alexander Mudd was a Maryland physician and Confederate sympathiser; he was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1865 for conspiracy in the murder of Abraham Lincoln (Mudd set the broken leg of assassin John Wilkes Booth after the assassination). He was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson for his actions in treating the victims of a yellow fever epidemic that struck the prison in which he was held.
