Lady Charlotte Boyle (1731 - 1754), wife of the 4th Duke o f Devonshire, was the only surviving child of Richard Boyle , the 3rd Earl of Burlington (1695 - 1753). Burlington wa s one of the most influential arbiters of taste in 18th century England, both as collector and architect. His most important building was the villa he built onto his house at Chiswick, to the west of London. The villa was his reinterpre tation of the rotunda built by Andrea Palladio in north Ita ly. Burlington formed an outstanding collection of Europea n paintings, commissioned furniture for his houses from hi s friend and protégé William Kent and his library include d most of the surviving architectural and other drawings b y Palladio and Inigo Jones, architect and court designer t o Kings James I and Charles I. By his marriage to Charlott e, the 4th Duke of Devonshire (1720 - 1764) eventually inhe rited Chiswick, Burlington House in London, Bolton Abbey an d Londesborough Hall in Yorkshire and Lismore Castle in Ire land. Many of the finest pieces of furniture and works of art at Chatsworth today derive from this inheritance.
